Image
During an interview on Tuesday with  Wisconsin  Public Radio, Kamala Harris stated her support for eliminating the  filibuster t o pass a law restoring the protections of  Roe v. Wade. The Washington Post: "Harris voices support for eliminating filibuster to secure abortion rights" On Tuesday, Harris voiced support for eliminating the Senate filibuster in order to pass a law restoring the protections of  Roe v. Wade  and secure nationwide abortion rights.   Harris, speaking to Wisconsin Public Radio, said: “I think we should eliminate the filibuster for  Roe.  To actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.” The filibuster means a 60-vote threshold is required to advance Senate legislation.   Harris’s statement on Tuesday marks the first time she affirmed her support for endi...

Campaign Ads: Trump's "Nonsense" v. Harris's "Both Wrong"

Image
Today I will be examining the most recent campaign ads posted on the YouTube pages of the Trump Campaign and the Harris Campaign.  Trump's latest campaign ad is titled "Nonsense". This ad states: Harris supports taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners. This is hard to believe but it's true. The liberal media is also shocked by this. "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" Analysis of the ad:     The acceptance of transgender people is a very partisan issue. According to the Pew Research Center,  54% of people who are or lean Republican feel that the acceptance of transgender people is very/somewhat bad for society. Comparatively, only 13% of people who are or lean Democrat report that the acceptance of transgender people is very/somewhat bad for society.      It seems that this ad is targeted towards those already identifying as Republicans. This ad may be an attempt to push those with a conservative viewpoint to register to vote...

Fox News v. MSNBC: JD Vance Responds to Taylor Swift's Harris Endorsement

Image
On Wednesday on Fox News' The Story with Martha MacCallum , JD Vance responded to Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris. Below is the segment from The Story . Start watching the video from the 11:55 mark to view Vance's response.  I will now examine the coverage of Vance's response by Fox News and MSNBC. Fox News:  "JD Vance reacts to Taylor Swift's jab at him, Harris endorsement: 'fundamentally disconnected'"  After Taylor Swift announced her endorsement of Kamala Harris, JD Vance stated on  The Story with Martha MacCallum ,  "We admire Taylor Swift's music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music, are fans of her or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans.  When grocery prices go up 20%, it hurts most Americans, it doesn't hurt Taylor Swift. When housing prices become unaffordable, it doesn...

The Power of Headlines: Does Context Matter?

Image
In this post, I will be examining the power of headlines. I am focusing on how different news media sources have titled their stories about JD Vance’s response to a question regarding the Apalachee High School shooting. Media sources have paid particular attention to Vance’s “fact of life” statement. Some sources seem to be using Vance’s quote out of context in their headlines.   Before looking at the different headlines, it is important to view Vance’s full response to the question.  The "fact of life" quote occurs around the 3:15 mark so I recommend watching at least from the 3-minute mark.  I will now look at the headlines used by different news media sources regarding Vance's statement. The Guardian: " Backlash for JD Vance after calling school shooting a ‘fact of life’" New York Magazine: " Did J.D. Vance Really Say Scho ol Shootings Are a ‘Fact of Life’?" MSNBC:   " JD Vance faces pushback over 'fact of life' school shootings remar...
